On 8 March 2019, in Hanoi, Vietnam Thermal Science and Technology Association organized the first Conference to report the result of project “Research and overall evaluation of coal-fired thermal power development in Vietnam.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Duy Nghia – Chairman of the Association, Head of the project chaired the Conference.
At the Conference, energy scientists, researchers, experts, presented 9 basic contents to develop coal-fired thermal power including: Proportion in structure of power generation sources; Coal supply strategy for coal-fired thermal power; Treating emissions into the environment, ensuring sustainable development; Developing  manufacturing industry for thermal power plants; Developing a system of synchronous national standards and technical regulations, inclining  towards thermal power plants, including coal-fired thermal power; Manpower training for coal-fired thermal power plants; Basic scientific studies on thermal power plants; Relationship of coal-fired thermal power development plan in connection with development plans for power, coal, oil and gas, construction materials and transportation sectors; Financial security to develop coal-fired thermal power.

Development of coal fired thermal power

According to experts, development of coal-fired thermal power is  inevitable trend in Vietnam

Commenting on the report, many delegates, energy scientists, experts agreed that the development of coal-fired thermal power is an inevitable trend to ensure energy security but using modern technology has to ensure environment

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Duy Nghia said that the future of renewable energy sources in Vietnam was very open, considering the fact that the demand for power had increased, if the development of coal-fired thermal power was not executed, power would not be sufficient to meet the socio-economic development. Coal-fired thermal power was still the most reasonable and effective power source to meet the country’s huge power demand.

At the same point of view, Mr. Nguyen Van Vy – Vice Chairman of Vietnam Energy Association said: Currently, all hydropower resources in Vietnam had been basically exploited, gas thermal power was expensive and renewable energy was only at the beginning stage, so coal-fired thermal power was still an inevitable trend to ensure energy security. The most important in the development of coal-fired thermal power currently was environmental protection. And in order to minimize the impact on the environment, coal-fired thermal power plants needed to strictly implement measures to dispose of toxic substances before discharging them into the environment, waste treatment methods must be applied with modern technology, regularly monitored for evaluating treatment results to get supports from the government and the people.

At the Conference, experts discussed the role of power sources in Vietnam’s energy developing strategy. In particular, in order to ensure sufficient power supply for the country’s socio-economic development, the development and operation of coal-fired thermal power plants still play a very important role. The key problem when developing coal thermal power is to ensure fuel sources for power generation in the context that Vietnam is importing primary materials.

It is necessary to improve the reliability, the operational efficiency of generator units, particularly, properly implement the environmental protection. For ash and slag of plants, a mechanism to boost underwriting and use it as a fuel source to produce construction materials should be taken.
